These Are The Best MLB Logos And Uniforms Ranked
The MLB has a whole host of traditions and iconic brands that have been around for over a century. From the New York Yankees "NY" logo to the "B" that sits on top of every Boston Red Sox player, some uniforms wouldn't dare change.
Other teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles can play around with their logo and uniform in an attempt to stay modern and relevant without fear of losing tradition. In this article we rank the teams with the best to worst uniform and logo ensemble. Where does your team land?
The Toronto Blue Jays Aren't Plagued By Tradition
You might be surprised to see the Toronto Blue Jays at number one on this list, but there's just something about that Jay that is captivating. No, the Blue Jays don't have a storied history in the league that's marked by tradition. This frees them up to be creative, different, and relevant with the times.
Their jerseys are cutting edge and beautifully incorporate a hint of red into the blue and white color scheme. This jersey is a real home run.
The Baltimore Orioles Have Tons Of Personality
Perhaps another shocking entry at number two, but the Baltimore Orioles have one of the slickest ensembles in the league. Switching back to the bird was a brilliant decision and one that gives every Orioles fan something very modern and fresh to wear.
They might be a lot of things, but they're not boring to look at and they have a lot of personality. Who says cursive writing is dead?
The New York Yankees Logo Is Untouchable
It's not flashy and it doesn't have to be. The Bronx Bombers have one of the most storied franchises in the history of sports and, therefore, get to basically keep the same jersey logo for what seems like centuries.
Even if you don't love the look of the pinstripes or grey based-jerseys, you have to respect the "NY" overlap which has stood the test of time. No one would, and no one should even consider tinkering with one of baseball's most legendary logos.
The Los Angeles Dodgers Are Iconic
The Los Angeles Dodgers have one of the most recognizable uniforms in the world. The Dodger blue works perfectly with the white, and the "LA" on the cap makes the franchise recognizable all around the world.
It would be extremely wise for them to keep the "LA" the exact same from now until the end of time. There's not much to critique the Dodgers in terms of what they wear.
St. Louis Cardinals Put On A Masterclass In Creativity
The St. Louis Cardinals put on a clinic with their jerseys and logo on how to make a killer uniform. First of all, they do the overlapping of letters better than anyone else in the league, which is tough to do.
Second of all, they didn't settle for just writing letters across their chest like most of the other teams. They decided to put a couple of cardinals on a baseball bat to add a splash of creativity to the mix.
The Washington Nationals Do Modern Perfectly
Once the Montreal Expos moved to Washington DC they had to come up with an entirely new vibe for the organization. The curly "W" was an instant hit and a job well done for the Nationals.
Cursive writing is always a pain to write, but they ended up doing a very good job with it. Their entire look is modern and new which contrasts many of the other "traditional" baseball teams who are keeping it simple.
The Los Angeles Angels Jerseys Are Sent From Heaven
Now that the Los Angeles Angels have the highest paid North American player in all of the major sports, they can just focus on winning on the field and with their jerseys. They took "Anaheim" out of their name which was a huge step in simplifying their brand.
Now, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols can feel swagged out every time they take to the field knowing they have one of the best looking jerseys. The halo that wraps around the "A" is an ingenious touch.
The Texas Rangers Exude Texas Spirit
The Texas Rangers made it into the top ten because every single one of their jerseys is extremely bold. The red jerseys make a big statement, while their blue-based jerseys mix in the red and white seamlessly.
The red trimming on the blue jerseys brings the entire uniform together while the "T" stays perfectly constant on all their jerseys. It's all very simple, and the Texas pride exudes from the team with the Texas flag on their shoulder.
The Boston Red Sox Are Timeless
It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that the Boston Red Sox made their way into the top ten. The famous "B" is timeless and you just get the feeling that it could last another 100 years without anyone getting tired of it.
No one does the red and white more seamlessly than the Boston Red Sox. They haven't changed much since their conception as an organization and I don't see them changing much in the future.
The Oakland A's Logo Is Attractive and Presentable
Many people would hesitate to put the Oakland A's anywhere near the top of the league in terms of their jersey and logo. Sure, their look isn't the most elite, but they did something right.
The font is attractive and looks extremely presentable on the hat. Having the "A's" on the crest looks simple, yet modern, and when they wear their white jerseys with "Athletics" written across it looks pretty solid as well. Yellow, green, and white surprisingly end up blending together nicely.
The San Francisco Giants Have Dynamic Jerseys
Another day, another National League West team that likes to interlock their letters. The San Francisco Giants execute it to near perfection. The orange and white, with sprinkles of black, really works well.
Having orange in your color scheme is risky because it's an easy color to screw up and make your entire team look like clowns. Fortunately, the Giants' players get to go out onto the field in one of the most dynamic looking uniforms.
The San Diego Padres Have A Smooth Overlap
The San Diego Padres are kind of an afterthought in the MLB despite putting out some decent teams. Now that they spent over $300 million on Manny Machado, it could be time to revise their logo design. It's not even close to being one of the worst in the league, and the overlap "SD" is smooth.
As it stands now, it's not a design that will blow fans away, and with their huge investment in the future coming on the field, they might want to re-brand their attire while they're at it.
The Milwaukee Brewers Made Due With What They Had
The Milwaukee Brewers made do with what they had to work with. Since their name refers to the city's relationship to beer brewing, their logo couldn't just simply have beer plastered on it. They ended up getting extremely creative with their hat logo that combined an "m" and a "b" together to make a baseball glove.
When they have the simple "M" on the hat, it's not horrible either considering how it stand out, especially compared to some other teams in MLB.
Chicago White Sox Utilize The Diagonal Letter Well
The black and white pinstripes have a pleasant vibe to them that feels very old school, but not in an outdated way. The diagonal "SOX" all skewed together on the hat is well-done and it looks fresh on the top of the jersey too.
Whether it's a white base or a black base on the jersey, they still maintain a very nice aesthetic look. They'll always be the baby brother of the Chicago Cubs, but at least they have a more detailed jersey.
Detroit Tigers Go The Calligraphic Route
We do need to give the Detroit Tigers some credit with their hat logo. The calligraphic "D" is unique, and unlike anything else you'll see in the MLB. It sets them apart from the rest of the league which is exactly the point of jerseys in the first place.
Deciding against using a Tiger in their design is a bit risky, but it didn't totally backfire in this case. Would we like to see a tiger every once in a while? Sure.
The Chicago Cubs Are "Traditional"
The Chicago Cubs are a legendary organization and the argument could be made that their traditional logo shouldn't be this far down the list, but there's always room for improvement.
Let's be honest here, when people use the word "traditional" to describe a logo, they're usually just saying it's old, outdated, and boring. Being named the "Cubs" and not having nearly enough cute animal cubs is not playing to the full potential of this organization.
Minnesota Twins Could Use A Spruce Up
For the Minnesota Twins, we do have to give them a little bit of credit on their hat logo. They could really put more effort in making their uniform represent Minnesota and the Twin Cities a little bit more, but they gave it a decent try.
As we said, the hat logo isn't horrible and is distinguishable from the rest of the league. The jerseys are very vanilla and could use a little sprucing up though.
The Kansas City Royals Need More Crowns, Or Something
There is so much that the Kansas City Royals organization has to play with in regards to their name. Being the Royals gives you so many options that most other teams don't have. The potential options, and the blue (sometimes powder blue) color scheme is why they're so far down this list.
We need more crowns, we need more Kings, we need more royal palaces, we need more everything. The "KC" is interlocking which is a good start, but we need a better finish.
Philadelphia Phillies Need More Cheesesteaks
Now that the Phillies have Bryce Harper in their lineup for the next decade, it's time to really think about making their logo a little more exciting. The pinstripes need to stay, but there seems to be something missing. Their jerseys aren't offensive or especially awful, but they don't have any "pop" in their attire.
They should maybe think about putting one of their famous cheesesteaks, or even pay homage to the Philly Phanatic in some way.
Tampa Bay Rays Need To Fight Harder For Attention
The Tampa Bay Rays are always going to be fighting for attention considering they're the smallest market in the American League East. So, having a logo that looks like it took five minutes flat to make from start to finish probably isn't going to cut it.
They made a big change by removing "Devil" Rays, but it seemed like the decision destroyed all of their creativity in the process. Does "Rays" refer to the sun or stingrays? We need answers that the logo doesn't give us.
Pittsburgh Pirates Need More Pirates
Times New Roman font is so yesterday, but here the Pittsburgh Pirates are putting it on their hats. Having the yellow and black color scheme is extremely lucky, but the fact that their logo is probably the most boring in the league doesn't help the team live up to the potential.
The fact that they only have a pirate on the side of their arm and not somewhere that people can actually see it is inexcusable and sad.
New York Mets Lack Any Flare
This might be an unpopular opinion, but the patch that the Mets have on their shoulders might also look good as the logo part of their hat. Since they're always going to be overshadowed by the New York Yankees, they might as well make a splash with how they look.
There seems to be a lack of flare and their design seems outdated and pretty sad, like a wilted flower. They can do better, but it's certainly not the worst.
The Cleveland Indians Will Have To Rebrand Completely
The Cleveland Indians have a very simple looking uniform. There isn't much to discuss here because they lack any sort of personality here. They've faced some criticism about the Chief Wahoo logo so they had to change it up and ended up going with a "C" that looks a lot like it belongs on a college team or something.
They're going to have to completely rebrand their organization, so I guess this is the first step in that process.
The Atlanta Braves Have Upgraded, But Still Have A Long Way To Go
Honestly, this logo is just extremely boring. Yes, it's true that boring is better than having the wrong color schemes or ugly logos, but it's still unappealing and unexciting. I will say that they've upgraded by adding a little bit of color to their hat, but their jerseys are still overall yawn-worthy.
They also used to have "Atlanta" written across their chest which looks much better than the Braves. The symmetry of the word Atlanta just feels better on the eyes.
The Houston Astros Need To Embrace Their Space Roots
It would be horrendous if a sports team from Houston didn't play off of the NASA Space Centers in the city. But, there seems to be a huge disconnect between what could've been and what actually happened. The logo looks like a bad fast food restaurant or something.
They need to embrace their astronaut roots much more and incorporate more than just a simple star on their hat. Where's the Mars or International Space Station representation?
The Colorado Rockies Haven't Peaked
Think about everything you could do with the Colorado Rockies logo and then look at what they came up with. Simple is good, but THIS simple? Where are the snow covered mountains? Where are the baseballs flying out of the stadium at record speed because of the altitude change?
Purple is an amazing color to be working with and it feels like they're just throwing it all away. There is a lot of potential and a lot of growth needed with these jerseys.
The Seattle Mariners Have Gotten Lazy
Now that Ichiro Suzuki has left the Seattle Mariners, they're going to need to find their "cool factor" again. The name itself and the vibe of the team is on-point but they can do a lot more with it. They basically threw a compass on the "S" and called it a day.
They should use that compass to help them find a new direction to take with their jerseys and logo. The color scheme is workable, but they're looking more like a First Mate than a Captain.
The Cincinnati Reds Have A Claustrophobic "C"
Perhaps the biggest complaint about the Cincinnati Reds logo is that the "C" is very close to being an "O." We need to hope that the letter C isn't claustrophobic because that's a very tight squeeze. It's safe to say that an overhaul is probably going to be needed for the Reds to move up on this list.
First things first with this team though, they need to revamp their mascot. It's literally just a baseball with a reds outfit on. Yikes.
The Miami Marlins Continues To Confuse Us
The Miami Marlins have had a hard time finding their own unique style in the league. Well, they do a really good job of confusing the rest of the MLB and their fanbase as to what vibe they're looking to give off.
Similar to the Marlins stadium, Miami's logo is too big and simply has way too much going on. The old fish-centric logo certainly wasn't a top-notch one, but there's no debate it was much better than the modern modeling of the team.
The Arizona Diamondbacks Are The Worst Of The Worst
Look, the Arizona Diamondbacks come in with the worst jerseys in the MLB. In a way, it's kind of a compliment because there's only one winner and there's only one loser of all losers. The color scheme seems confusing and the "A" is bulky and blocky.
There are a lot of different avenues that the D-Backs could've taken and they passed up on all of them. How do you not go back to the jerseys that have a sweet snake on it?
