These High School Basketball Teams Are Considered The Greatest Of All Time
Before they hit the NBA, players must prove they've got what it takes in high school. Every NBA talent was, at one point, a dominant player in their hometown. These high school teams had what it takes to go all the way. Take a look at the greatest high school teams in history.
1976-77 North Eugene High School
If you were alive to witness it, you know that there aren't many high school talents that can compare to what Danny Ainge did during his time at North Eugene High School in Eugene, Oregon.
He led the squad to back-to-back state championships while he was there. Not to mention he also was an All-State quarterback. The man was a legend.
1976-77 Everett High School
Magic Johnson has to be the greatest high school player to ever come out of Michigan. The man led the team to a state championship in '77 behind averages of 28.8 points and 16.8 rebounds per game.
They weren't recording high school assists yet, but it's safe to say Johnson probably averaged a triple-double.
2015-16 Chino Hills High School
If you wanted to see a team filled with future NBA players, the 2015-16 Chino Hills Huskies were that. They had Lonzo Ball, LaMelo Ball, Onyeka Okongwu, and LiAngelo Ball.
Lamelo and Lonzo both ended up becoming top-five picks in the draft. Meanwhile, Okongwu landed at number six in the 2020 draft. The team's record was 35-0.
1954-55 Overbrook High School
Any team that rosters Wilt Chamberlain is going to be an issue. Wilt the Stilt led this team to a 20-0 record while scoring over 70 points on two occasions.
He also scored more than 90 once. Colleges offered him movie roles, diamonds, and cash to join their program. Chamberlain went on to become of the greatest basketball players in history.
2008-09 Findlay Prep
Findlay Prep is in Henderson, Nevada, and in 2009, they had a stacked team. Think of Avery Bradley, Cory Joseph, and Tristian Thompson dominating together in high school.
Under head coach Michael Peck, this team was undefeated at 30-0. Bradley was the star on the team averaging 19 points per game.
2016-17 Nathan Hale High School
Michael Porter Jr. was the man in Seattle, Washington, while playing for Nathan Hale High. He was virtually unstoppable under head coach and former NBA star Brandon Roy.
This team won a state championship while Porter averaged 36 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists per game. The team ended up 29-0 that year.
1980-81 Cambridge Rindge and Latin School
When a player leads a school to three state championships, that team deserves to be on a list. Patrick Ewing was a man amongst boys when he played in high school.
He led the team to a 26-0 record in '81 because they could easily beat anyone that came in their way.
2005-06 Lawrence North High School
A team with Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. is enough to get things done in high school. No one was safe in Indianapolis, Indiana when the Wildcats came to your arena.
This team finished the season with a 29-0 record, as it was impossible to stop their stellar inside-outside game with Oden and Conley. Sadly, fans couldn't see Oden perform to his potential in the NBA, due to injury.
2006-07 Huntington High School
It's almost confusing to know that a team with Patrick Patterson, O.J. Mayo, and Jamaal Williams lost two games together! Huntington High went 25-2 in '07, but Mayo gave it his all.
He became the National Player of the Year with another future NBA player, Patterson, playing at his side.
2013-14 Montverde Academy
It had to be scary for opposing coaches when Montverde Academy was on the schedule. Figuring out a strategy to stop both Ben Simmons and D'Angelo Russell sounds like a nightmare.
The world didn't know how great these two would become, but they were already good enough to win back-to-back national titles in high school.
2009-10 Ames High School
Lining up against Doug McDermott and Harrison Barnes isn't an easy day for anyone after doing geometry. That's what teams had to face when they played Ames high school.
The basketball team would go 27-0, and their coach won USA Today National Coach of the Year in 2009-10. Barnes and McDermott would go on to play spectacular college basketball.
2006-07 Simeon Career Academy
Behind Derrick Rose, Simeon Career Academy could do no wrong. The NBA's youngest MVP ever powered the Chicago team to back-to-back state championships.
He was a force of nature on the court. In his final season, he averaged 25 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He ended up carrying that same style of play over into the NBA.
1963-64 Power Memorial High School
New York City had a team that no one wanted to face. That's all thanks to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the leading scorer in NBA history that led Power Memorial to a 30-0 record in '64.
Overall, he also gave them a 71 win streak which sounds ridiculous. No one could beat him in 71 tries.
1992-93 Oak Hill Academy
Oak Hill Academy has an excellent reputation for recruiting 5-star athletes and crushing opponents along the way. Going back to 1993, they had a formidable team that included Jerry Stackhouse and Jeff McGinnis.
That year, they went 36-0. The wildest part about those wins is that six of them were against college teams before winning the national championship!
2016-17 Westtown School
Here's a more recent team filled with NBA talent. It almost isn't fair when you think about Mo Bamba, Cam Reddish, and Brandon Randolph putting on the same jersey.
The team was so good; they had a documentary in 2018. They also won consecutive state titles in 2016 and 2017.
2001-02 Lincoln High School
It goes without saying that any team with a future Hall of Famer would be a tough out in high school. Chris Bosh and Bryan Hopkins lead Lincoln high school to a 40-0 record in 2001-02.
They became the first Texas team in 27 years to win the national championship when they beat the Carmelo Anthony Oak Hill Academy team.
1995-96 Lower Merion High School
Any team that had Kobe Bryant is going to be a team that competes for championships. Bryant was the first freshman to start on Varsity for Lower Merion.
By his senior year, the Black Mamba became the most spectacular high school player in the nation. He led the team to a state championship with 30.8 points and 12 rebounds per game.
2002-03 St. Vincent-St. Mary High School
All you need to know about this team is LeBron James. His final season in high school was a thing of beauty for St. Vincent-St. Mary.
ESPN began casting his games on national TV because he was that good. There wasn't a team that could compete with the future king.
1994-95 Farragut Academy
Kevin Garnett was a talent good enough to skip college and go straight to the league. While playing in Chicago for Farragut Academy, he and Ronnie Fields created one of the best high school duos ever.
Garnett went on to become the first player drafted out of high school in 20 years after leading the team to a 28-2 record.
1982-83 Dunbar High School
Reggie Williams, Muggsy Bogues, Keith James, Mike Brown, Tim Dawson, and Reggie Lewis all played together in high school. Those names might not mean much to the new generation, but they were a force in their day.
These guys beat opponents by an average of 36.5 points. In the 1982-83 season, they beat teams from seven different states on their way to becoming 31-0. Many say this is the greatest high school team ever.
