Mike McCarthy Knows What Went Wrong In Green Bay
Heading into the 2018 NFL season, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy knew he was on the hot seat. Speaking with ESPN recently he even said as much, "If we missed the playoffs, I expected change might happen." He never expected, however, that 13 years into his tenure, he would be fired midseason.
The move marked the first time in 60 years the Packers decided to cut ties with their head coach before every game was played. McCarthy thought he deserved a more appropriate ending, "It was time to make change. He [Mark Murphy] said something about the offense and the special teams, and he didn't think it was going to get any better. There was no emotion to it. That was hard."
It was an ugly divorce for a man who molded Aaron Rodgers into an MVP and Super Bowl winning quarterback. Unfortunately, by the end of their run together, respect for each other had waned. Rodgers was no longer coachable, and McCarthy struggled playing nice.
After the 2018 season ended, McCarthy interviewed for the New York Jets head coaching job. It went to Adam Gase. Now he'll spend the next year with his family, catching up on everything he's missed. And when the 2020 season starts, he hopes to be on the sidelines, somewhere.
